In order to provide good public service
and fulfill existing demand, Eastern Canada needs the following:
A)
Pedodontist (Children’s specialist) – in order to deal with “difficult”
cases. The present specialists in Nova Scotia are grossly overbooked and service
to the community is compromised in this regard.
B) Dental Anesthesiologist – to assist the very high proportion of patients
that avoid dental care due to fear. Provision of general anesthesia (“Twilight
sleep” etc.) would benefit these patients tremendously.
C) Endodontist – more expertise is needed to fulfill the demand. Tremendous
strives are being made in the area of saving teeth that in this are of dentistry
that benefit the public tremendously (e.g. microscopy).
D) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon – Non hospital private hospital services
(as in any other Canadian region) e.g. 3rd molar extraction is an option that in
Dr. Thompson's view could provide significant levels in service for the community/taxpayers/patients.
