An Orthodontists View of Thumb Sucking

• Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of bad bites are not caused by thumb sucking, however, they can be made worse by this habit.
• Permanent damage is generally avoided if patient’s cease thumb sucking before 8 years of age.
• Some appliances work well to prevent thumb sucking.
• There is no evidence in the literature to support the use of expensive “orthodontic” soothers for babies and most babies manage fine with the usual kind.

Please consult your general dentist and/or orthodontist for further details on this habit.
