TMJ Diagnosis

Dr. Thompson - Straight Talk:

Dr. Thompson also practices in the area of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) as well as Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Although we can provide some very general and basic information, due to the complexity of these conditions, a consultation is required in order to diagnose a specific condition and treat it accordingly.

In order to provide the best possible service to his patients Dr. Thompson deals with other clinicians in several areas and totally embraces a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. A Registered Massage Therapist trained specifically in this area practices in our clinic and Dr. Thompson keeps a database of outside clinicians (including physiotherapists) who deal with the TMJ and head and neck area. Dr. Thompson also takes pride in the fact that he corresponds regularly with all clinicians involved in the patient’s care in order to maintain open lines of communication and complete quality of care.

SPECIFIC DIAGNOSIS

The specific diagnosis is craniomandibular pain dysfunction syndrome. This term is now used more correctly to describe what previously (and in a more limited meaning) was referred to as “TMJ” or temporomandibular joint pain dysfunction syndrome. CMD is essentially a musculo-skeletal injury of various etiologies. Associated neuro-vascular tissues are involved as is the head and neck area and often the shoulder and back. It is well recognized (eg: by A.M.A.) as well as well documented and researched.
