TMJ/TMD Reality Check

  1. If treatment is not accessed rapidly things will get worse!
  2. You may have periods of “no pain”, however, you will get worse!
  3. If you do not follow our treatment recommendations you will in all likelihood become a chronic pain patient!
  4. Chronic pain is very poorly dealt with by our semi-socialized system. Generally expensive and function-decreasing medications are used resulting in usually minimal function on a day-to-day basis and an inability to hold down a worthwhile job are the end result.
  5. There is no magical surgical quick fix! In our office, if jaw (surgical) movement is involved, I consider the standard of care to include ‘braces” (for reasons of safety, good prognosis, esthetics and function!) If you wish not to proceed with this level of care, kindly inform us so that we can have you sign a waiver to limit our liability.
  6. Chronic pain for such cases are best treated by a certified dental specialist – if you wish to be placed on the hospital wait list for chronic pain medication therapy by an MD – just ask and we would be happy to arrange if this is your wish!
  7. Whatever the cause of delay (eg. finances, litigation, insurance, etc.) is irrelevant in terms of the way your body will deal with your symptoms, ie. deterioration will occur and is usually irreversible.
  8. Please discuss any concerns with us so we can assist you to access rapid treatment of the root cause of your problems rather than watching it get worse. Help us to help you!
  9. Ultimately, (although we are happy to assist with insurance coverage explanations) you are responsible for fees related to your treatment.
  10. Your health is your responsibility.
